Bus Rider Reminders
As a reminder, students who ride the buses to and from school, are expected to regularly ride their assigned buses. If the student does not need bus transportation for a day, please call the Transportation Office at (815) 899-8158.
Please also take this time to remind your students of a few important bus rules:
- Students should arrive 5 minutes prior to the bus stop time
- Students must be picked up and dropped off at the same location, Monday through Friday.
- The District does not allow guests to ride with bus students to or from school.
A full list of Transportation Procedures and Expectations can be found on the District’s website. Students found to be violating these expectations are subject to the following disciplinary procedures.
SMS Jazz Band
The SMS jazz band is getting ready to start another awesome year! We are looking for students who play guitar, bass, piano, drum set, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. Auditions take place on Monday, October 7, and the audition music is available in the band room. Audition sign-ups will take place next week. If you have questions, contact Mr. Goodman, jazz band director, or talk to Mr. Mertens in the band room.
SMS Jazz Strings
Jazz Strings auditions will be Monday, October 7 at 6:00-7:00 PM. The first Jazz Strings rehearsal will take place on Monday, October 14 at 6:00-7:00 PM. We rehearse every Monday, October 14-December 9 then resume February 3-April 27
If your student needs to do a retake, they will be on October 4. Please have your student bring the pictures with them. If students were not here on the first day of school, they will need to come and get their pictures taken that day as well.
Tryouts are right around the corner for 7th and 8th graders. There is a Parent and Athlete meeting on Thursday, October 3 at 6:00 PM in the middle school cafeteria. Tryout practices are Monday, October 7 and Tuesday, October 8 at 3:15-5:30 PM. Official Tryouts are Wednesday, October 9 at 3:15-5:30 PM. Students must be signed up on 8to18 and have an updated physical on file before tryout practices. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Dance Team tryouts are also coming up for 7th and 8th Graders. There will be an Athlete informational meeting on Wednesday, October 2 at 7:45 AM at SMS. Love reading? Want to read good books and make some new friends? Come on down to the main office to sign up for the 2019-2020 SMS Book Club. We are excited to get this going again this year! You can sign up during study hall, lunch, before school, or after school.
We are excited to present our eleventh Sycamore Middle School Run-A-Thon Fundraiser! This is an exciting event that creates team building and incorporates physical fitness in a positive atmosphere. It gives the students an opportunity to raise some money for the school without asking them to go out and sell products. It will take place on Wednesday, September 25. SMS Parents, we are looking for some volunteers to help out on Run-A-Thon day (Wednesday, September 25). No experience is needed; we will train on site. There will be shifts by grade level, and times would be the following: 8th Grade at 8:20-10:30 AM, 7th Grade at 10:35 AM -12:45 PM, 6th Grade at 12:50-3:00 PM. The MS Minute
The MS minute is a student directed announcement show produced by our 7th grade introduction to journalism and broadcasting classes. Inktober is back! Any artwork containing ink can be submitted to this art show! When your ink based artwork is completed, please submit it to the art room. Submissions are due Wednesday, October 2. If you have any questions please ask Mrs. Katz or Ms. Meserole!
Sycamore Park District – No School Day Trip
Are you ready to jump? Take a trip with the Sycamore Park District to Epic Air trampoline park in South Elgin, Illinois on Friday, October 11. Take your pick from open jump court, long tracks, foam pit, dodgeball court and cageball. Free bounce your way around the different areas for 2 hours. Participants are encouraged to bring a packed lunch or money for food. Fee includes admission into epic air trampoline park, transportation to and from the park and free open gym if you choose once we arrive back at the community center. Register here!
6th grade students and new, out-of-state students to Sycamore Middle School are required to have a physical on file with the school nurse no later than 8:15 AM on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. If records have not been received by this date, students will not be allowed to remain in school until these records have been returned to the school nurse.
