It’s almost track season! If you are a 7th or 8th grade student interested in going out for the Track Team, please attend this informational meeting on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:50 AM in the Main Gym. See Mr. Knoblock or Mrs. Cambier if you have any questions.

Our students take federally required assessments every spring. These assessments help us understand how our students are growing academically, compared to their peers across the state. The state uses this information to provide more support and resources to the schools in the greatest need. This year, the English language arts and math assessment for grades 3-8 is called the Illinois Assessment of Readiness.

The Illinois Assessment of Readiness is almost exactly the same this year as the assessment that students took last year, only slightly shorter. The Illinois Assessment of Readiness measures the same Illinois Learning Standards and includes the same high-quality test questions that teachers and students have become familiar with over the past four years.

Our students should feel confident showing what they know and can do on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, even with the new test name and new look.

Illinois Assessment of Readiness testing occurs statewide in March and April. 7th Grade students will begin testing next week, March 11-March 15. 6th Grade students will test select days during the weeks of March 18-March 22 and April 8-April 12. 8th Grade students will test April 1-April 5.

The Spartan Food Pantry located at West Elementary School is open this Wednesday, March 6, from 4:30-6:30 PM. The Pantry is open to any family that has a student attending a Sycamore School. Just bring a photo ID.

The pantry is a choice-pantry that offers frozen foods (burgers, chicken tenders, other meats), fresh produce, dairy products, canned goods, snacks, treats, and much more. Families can come to the pantry every time it is open and choose what items they would or would not like to take. The next one is March 20.

The 32nd annual Science Olympiad is nearly here! Join us for an evening of science related fun provided by our SMS students, the DeKalb County Farm Bureau, and NIU STEM Outreach. The events begin at 5:30 PM. To get prepared for the event, next week a Science Spirit Week will be celebrated with a new theme each day: Monday-wear pink to support girls pursuing a passion in STEM; Tuesday-support skilled science positions by wearing jeans, flannel, and boots; Wednesday-wear a shirt from your favorite science fiction movie; Thursday-wear any science related apparel to get excited for the big event; Friday-wear green to keep the Earth clean. Check out the promotional video and the flashback video!

The last day of school will be Thursday, May 30. Students will be dismissed at 11:00 AM. Other end of the year events and activities will be updated on our website calendar.

The Board of Education has approved the 2019-2020 Academic Year Calendar. The calendar is similar to past years and we will continue to use President’s Day in February as an Emergency Day. This allows for instructional time to be made up earlier, rather than adding time on at the end of the year.
