We are so proud of the innovation that comprises the teaching and learning in our district that we want the world to know!

We’re proud of our district’s innovation and have entered the Follett Challenge – a program designed by Follett, the K-12 content and educational technology company, to find and reward the schools who are designing 21st century teaching and learning programs.

Please support us by viewing our video and voting through the following link: http://follettchallenge.com/videos/1232. Twenty percent of our total score is based on how well we spread the word about our video and earn votes! You can cast one vote per day January 21- 25, 2019, so be sure to visit often!

Thirteen prizes will be awarded. The Grand-Prize winner will be chosen from the pool of Semi-Finalists and awarded an additional $30,000, for a total of $60,000. In addition, the Grand-Prize winner will win a celebration at their school featuring New York Times Bestselling author and NEWBERY medal-winner, Kwame Alexander! The Follett Challenge Semi-Finalists and People’s Choice (video) winners will be announced on February 27, 2019, and the Grand-Prize winner will be announced on April 24, 2019.

In the meantime, we hope you will join us in advocating for our district’s innovative programs by voting for us! Although the video was filmed at West Elementary, each and every district building may use this virtual reality program. Teachers were given training on this at our last Institute Day and the Google Expedition cart has already traveled to other buildings. If we are able to secure a win, we will be able to secure learning products for our entire district!

Voting can occur one time EACH DAY from January 21 – 25.

The Board of Education has approved the 2019-2020 Academic Year Calendar. The calendar is similar to past years and we will continue to use President’s Day in February as an Emergency Day. This allows for instructional time to be made up earlier, rather than adding time on at the end of the year.

The First National Challenge Basketball games are this Friday, January 25. We have tickets for sale in the main office. All tickets are $6.00.

All Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Dance, Cheer, and Wrestling are invited to do the Parade of Athletes Friday Night at the First National Challenge at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center. This will take place between the boys and girls games. Contact your coach for more details.

Order your yearbook today at yearbookordercenter.com to ensure you receive a copy (code: 16551)! Quantities will be limited after January 28.

Are you a 6th Grade girl who is interested in trying out for the 7th Grade volleyball team this summer? We will be putting on a FREE clinic to teach some basic skill and concepts. The first day will be after school on February 4. Registration Sheets are available in the office.

It’s that time of year again… talent show time! We need all singers, dancers, gymnasts, comedians, and performers to get your acts ready for the judges! Auditions will be held the week of February 11 in Mrs. Peck’s classroom. Sign up now with any of the following teachers: Mrs. Peck, Ms. Frankiewicz, Mrs. Wright, Ms. Johnson, Mrs. Tadie, or Mrs. Shields.

Any 8th grade students interested in DANCE 2 next year, you will need to sign-up in the MAIN office and attend a try-out session that will be next week on Tuesday, January 29. More information will be provided at Orientation Night. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Hill at SHS (khill@syc427.org).

Builder’s Club will be collecting gently used or new coats, hats, and gloves to be donated to the Sycamore Food Pantry and Katie’s Closet. Please leave them in the Commons. Collection will end on January 31.

8th Grade Parents – Mark your calendars! Monday, January 28 at 6:30PM our eighth grade parents and students are invited to the Sycamore High School Auditorium for Registration Night. At this meeting, parents and students will learn about class requirements, the Naviance program, registering for classes, and due dates for High School schedules. At the conclusion of the presentation, parents and students will have the opportunity to learn from each of the different departments by attending the Curriculum Fair in the High School Fieldhouse. Please plan on attending this important event.

Your child’s classroom will be receiving the Erin’s Law presentations during the weeks of February 11-15. Information about the presentations is available on our district website under the Our Departments Tab. Under the Learning and Teaching Department section, look for Parent Resources. If you have questions or would like your child not to participate in this presentation, please contact James Cleven, building principal, or Mary Gentile, social worker, by February 4, 2019.

On Saturday, February 9, The Sycamore Music Boosters will again be hosting their annual A Note to Remember Classical and Jazz Gala Fundraiser at Blumen Gardens. This adult only event begins at 7:00PM. For more information visit sycamoremusicboosters.com

At least every other year, districts throughout Illinois are asked to participate in the 5Essential survey to gather information from our faculty, students and parents to gain insight in the key components of all successful schools. These areas include effective leaders, collaborative teachers, involved families, supportive environments, and ambitious instruction.

The results of the survey responses are reported back to the schools for their review and planning for future school improvement focus items within the five areas.

We need your assistance and your feedback. As a district, we have chosen to provide the opportunity for you, the parents/guardians of our students, to offer us feedback via the 5Essentials parent survey. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and can be completed on your smart device.

Your participation in the parent survey will help us understand the conditions here at the school and guide improvement. Your identity and individual survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

To take the survey, click here.

For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, please visit https://illinois.5-essentials.org.

Thank you, in advance, for your time and participation.
