Our students take federally required assessments every spring. These assessments help us understand how our students are growing academically, compared to their peers across the state. The state uses this information to provide more support and resources to the schools in the greatest need. This year, the English language arts and math assessment for grades 3-8 is called the Illinois Assessment of Readiness.

The Illinois Assessment of Readiness is almost exactly the same this year as the assessment that students took last year, only slightly shorter. The Illinois Assessment of Readiness measures the same Illinois Learning Standards and includes the same high-quality test questions that teachers and students have become familiar with over the past four years.

Our students should feel confident showing what they know and can do on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, even with the new test name and new look.

Illinois Assessment of Readiness testing occurs statewide in March and April. 7th Grade students will begin testing this week, March 11-March 15. 6th Grade students will test select days during the weeks of March 18-March 22 and April 8-April 12. 8th Grade students will test April 1-April 5.

Each month, the SMS PTO provides lunch for teachers and staff. If you are able to assist by donating items and/or assisting with set-up or clean-up, please click here.

The 32nd annual Science Olympiad is nearly here! Join us for an evening of science related fun provided by our SMS students, the DeKalb County Farm Bureau, and NIU STEM Outreach. The events begin at 5:30PM on Thursday, March 14.

On Monday, March 18, we will take spring pictures. Picture forms have been sent home with your child. Online orders can be made at inter-state.com/order. Use order code: 37623JA. The online store will close the day before on Sunday, March 17.

There will be a high jump introduction for 7th graders this week in the Aux Gym from 3:15PM-4:30PM. 7th Grade Girls meet Monday and Wednesday; 7th Grade Boys meet Tuesday and Friday. If you have any questions, please see Ms. Dominguez.

It’s time to “Plunge Into Fitness”. This year you can participate until Friday, April 5. The logs are in the Commons, next to the nurse’s office. If you complete the log, you will win a pass to Raging Waves Water Park.

The last day of school will be Thursday, May 30. Students will be dismissed at 11:00AM. Other end of the year events and activities will be updated on our website calendar.

The Board of Education has approved the 2019-2020 Academic Year Calendar. The calendar is similar to past years and we will continue to use President’s Day in February as an Emergency Day. This allows for instructional time to be made up earlier, rather than adding time on at the end of the year.
