Participation in Athletics or Extracurricular Activities by Home School Students
Sycamore Community Unit District 427 will allow home school students to participate in athletics and extracurricular activities. In order to participate at Sycamore CUSD 427, home school students must comply with the state governing bodies’ requirements for attendance, transfer and enrollment. For Sycamore High School that is the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), for Sycamore Middle School that is the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA). All home school students must work with a guidance counselor and athletic director if they wish to participate in athletics and extracurricular activities.
The home school student must:
1. Enroll in the school based on their current grade.
2. Pay applicable fees
3. Families, including the student athlete, must meet with a Guidance Counselor and the Athletic Director to review the academic course load and the state eligibility requirements.
a. Take and pass at least one course at the member school eachsemester.
b. The student cannot take more than 7 academic class between the home school courses and the courses in Sycamore CUSD 427.
c. Home School courses must be from a program approved by Sycamore CUSD 427.
i. AdvancED/Cognia
ii. James Madison High School
iii. Penn Foster
iv. Pearson
v. APEX Virtual Learning School
vi. Other programs can be brought forward for approval
d. Parents/Guardians submit grade reports weekly to the Athletic Director. (*)
e. Must have passed a minimum of 5 classes the previous semester (excluding incoming freshmen). (*)
f. Must be passing a minimum of 5 classes per week. (*)
g. Per IHSA, receive transcript credit for graduation. (*)
4. Must remain continuously enrolled to maintain eligibility under the IHSA and IESA.
